We all find them annoying, especially if you use a REAL password and not something like “myname123abc”. Or, maybe you’re the type that has a different unique password for each and every login that you have. Regardless of how secure or not your password is, the fact is that passwords are a necessity in today’s world, and everyone would agree that we have too many passwords.

Here are some basic tips to follow.

#1 – Make sure you have a unique password. JaneDoe12345 is an example of what not to do. Create a STRONG password, use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

#2 – If you ever think that one of your accounts has been hacked, breached, or compromised – first and foremost IMMEDIATELY change your password! Then try to figure out what happened by running virus scans, contacting your network administrator, or researching to see if a company that you use had their system or website hacked.

#3 – Two-factor authentication is available for many websites and services and you should always use this whenever possible. A unique / strong password combined with two-factor authentication is as secure as it can get.

#4 – Find or use a password manager. Having to memorize 100 passwords is a puzzle most cannot solve. Make it easy on yourself with having a password protected file that stores your passwords.

#5 – This is not a necessary step, but copy and paste your password rather than typing it in when possible. This step is almost necessary if you are on a machine or device other than your own or using a public device. If you are using a device that is not yours or a public one, ALWAYS LOGOUT!

We hope that you found some of these tips useful in this everchanging fast paced technology world that we live in.

Passwords.
