What is a domain name?

Friday, August 15th, 2025

Your domain name is similar to your street address; it is a specific address unique to one location – that location being where people go to access your website. Most domain names end in a .com, like google.com or webleaps.com. There are many commonly used extensions, including .org, .net, .co, .info, .edu, and others. For most businesses, if a .com is available, it is chosen as it is the ideal extension and most widely recognized.

Registering a domain name is easy, but who makes sure it stays active? Through our years in business, we have had people who lost their domain reach out to us. Some of these reasons were because they no longer had access to the email used to register the domain, the employee who registered it left the company, a credit card expired and they didn’t notice, and a domain registrar was bought out, just to name a few. These are all avoidable situations.

You can secure a domain name by paying a yearly fee, which depends on the registrar or reseller that you buy it from. You can purchase this yourself by setting up your account using a registrar (GoDaddy, for example), or you can go through a reseller that will handle the renewal for you (WebLeaps, for example) and bill you separately. Most of our clients choose to have us handle their renewals for peace of mind that their domain name renewal won’t expire due to a missed email or an expired credit card.
